Before I get into practical strategies for improving your Google
Rankings, there are a few things about Search Engine Optimization
that I want to cover.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is simply the practice of
modifying a website to naturally attract visitors by achieving
high rankings in the search engine results.
Many people get a little nervous when I talk about search engine
optimization because they think I am going to pull out a lot
of techno-garble but the reality is that the basics of search
engine optimization is really quite simple.
If you could read the thoughts (okay they don't have thoughts
but let's pretend) of a search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN
you would find that they are simply trying to deliver the most
accurate search results for their visitors.
Our job is to try and create a website that matches the search
engines' expectations.
Search engines do rank websites using very complicated mathematical
equations (known as algorithms). Google's algorithm, for example,
is rumored to have over 500 million variables. Fortunately, these
500 million variables can be boiled down to
two main criteria: on page factors which include what keywords
you place where on the page itself and the more important (especially
with Google) off-page factors. Which are incoming links to your
website.
As soon as you signed up for your Mortgage Web Success site,
your site's pages were optimized for mortgage related keywords
combined with the city you used in the your company address (e.g.
Brian Sacks' site http://www.marylandloantips.com
is optimized for Owings Mills + mortgage related keywords like "mortgage
broker").
When you complete(d) the Local Information section of your
Quick Start Wizard, you further optimize your site. This alone
can get many sites good rankings within 30-60 days for Yahoo,
many of the smaller search engines and sometimes even MSN.
Google is a different animal all together. Google places a
lot of relevance on the number and QUALITY of links you have
coming into your website.
By quality of links we mean that all links are NOT created
equal. For instance, if your site is about mortgages and a site
about dogs links to you, Google will not give you as many "bonus
points" for that link as they will if a site about loans
or real estate links to you.
Also, Google will give you more "bonus points" for
a link from a site that is considered a top site in a certain
industry (aka an Authority site). For example, a link from Bankrate.com
to a mortgage broker site would be considered a high quality
link by Google. These are definitely the hardest links to acquire.
The process of building high quality links to your website
is one of the most important things you can do to improve your
rankings in Google. The ideal situation would be for other sites
to see that your website offers valuable information and so they
would naturally link to you.
The problem with this is that it could take a long time for
you to get a large number of links this way.
So, we suggest that you try to get links into your site artificially
but in a way that it looks like the links came naturally.
The process is fairly simple and if we could automate it, we
definitely would.
There are several sources you will want to acquire
links from:
1. Popular General Topic Directories
2. Local Websites and Directories for Your Business
Area
3. Directories and Websites related to the Topic of
Your Website
The Best Places To Start Getting Links
Rather than swapping links from other sites (this should be
your very last linking strategy and never swap links with unrelated
sites), consider submitting your site to web directories.
Here is a list of some important general-topic web directories
that allow you to post your site for free:
#1: http://dmoz.org
Within Dmoz, go to this directory page:
http://dmoz.org/Business/Financial_Services/Mortgages/Regional/United_States/
Click on your State Name
Click “Suggest URL” and follow the directions for
posting.
#2: http://www.abilogic.com/suggest-a-site.php?cat=1370
#3: http://www.allthewebsites.org/webdirectory/?cid=48
*You must register for an account before you can post your
link with
this website.
#4: http://www.yeandi.com/add1.asp?c=247
*Select from the Free Standard Review option or the Express
Review for $10
#5: http://dir.jayde.com/cgi-bin/submit.cgi
*PLEASE NOTE: Some directories will only allow you to post
a top level domain like marylandloantips.com and
WILL NOT allow you to post a sub domain like marylandloantips.mortgagewebsuccess.com
For more information on domains vs. sub domains see the link
at the bottom of this message.
**You can type in your keyword (e.g. mortgages) into the search
box of each directory to find the appropriate category. It is
very important than you do select the proper category. When possible,
we have given you the direct link for the submission to the preferred
category.
Here are some of the most important fee based web directories
(well worth the cost):
http://www.joeant.com - One Time $39.99 Fee
http://www.goguides.org - One Time $39.99
Fee
Mortgage Category Link: http://www.goguides.org/DIR/add_url.php?c=10941
http://www.bluefind.com - One time $49.95
Fee
Mortgage Category Submit Link - http://www.bluefind.com/add/4033.php
http://www.skaffe.com - One Time $39.99 Fee
http://www.sevenseek.com - One Time $40 Fee
You should also submit your site to the following Local
Portals:
Google Local - https://www.google.com/local/add/login
Yahoo Local - http://listings.local.yahoo.com
We currently have a list of over 200 sources for you to submit
your site and will be sharing all the sources over time. Remember,
the goal is to have Google think the links you acquire were naturally
placed so you do not want to post your site on all 200 sources
at once.
These linking strategies will not only help you rank well in
Google but will also help with several other major search engines.
By the way, if this is still confusing, don't worry. I have
a video tutorial walking you through the process here:

Google Update:
If your site does not automatically show up in Google's search
engine, don't be discouraged.
At the end of last year, Google released an algorithm change
that places new sites in a probationary pool. Basically, they
penalize you for what we are seeing as 1 to 4 months which lowers
your rankings during that time. This is designed to stop or slow
search engine optimizers that use tricks to get high rankings.
In the next email, I will cover the
next two linking strategies:
Finding Local Websites and Directories for Your Business
Area
Finding Directories and Websites related to the topic
of your website
I will also share with you some alternate ways to get links
to your website including outsourcing the work.
